Bryan
Hi I’m Bryan Jones, retired and living in Lampeter; currently I am a postgraduate student at the University researching the life and theology of Thomas Phillips who was one of my great, great, great, great grandfathers. My great, great, great grandfather Moses Rees wrote the only biography of his father-in-law in 1845. I would be very grateful for any information or contacts relating to Thomas Phillips or any of his or his wife’s families.

Hi My great grandmother was Anne Phillips daughter of John Phillips of Scythlin where she was born in 1839. She married Thomas Thomas, son of David Thomas and Mary (nee Jones) in 1862 in Pencader chapel.Their daughter Elizabeth married Edward Jorden and my mother was one of their 16 children. I am researching my Welsh family and would love to make proper contact and find out more especially about the Thomas side
Hello Liz,
Thank you for your enquiry about the Phillips family. I will look into the descendants of John Phillips, but I don’t have a very detailed tree for that branch of the family. I can tell you that there are no Phillips of Thomases living in Scythlyn now, although a descendant of David Phillips, the father of John lives and farms across the valley from Scythlyn.
Will write further if I have more details.
Regards
Bryan
Hi Bryan
Many thanks for the reply. I would be most interested in what you may find. Have just joined Dyfed FHS to see if they can offer any info. Quite a job with all the Thomases and Phillips and not knowing the Welsh places.
Cheers
Bryan
Hi Bryan
Re reading your first email to me I wonder if there is any possibility of having a name/address of the descendant of David Phillips so I may make contact or perhaps if you know the person you woold be kind enough to give them my email and let them know I am making genealogical enquiries.
Incidentally Thomas Thomas my great grandfather who married Anne Phillips was born in Llanfihangel ar arth which I believe is in the same area. I managed to find Scythlyn on an OS map.
Thanks
Liz
Dear Liz,
I will talk to my cousin Arwyn at Penlan farm and see how he wants to contact you. I don’t think he uses email very much!
Yes, Llanfihangel ar arth is a very large parish which includes Pencader and of course Scythlyn. Before your Thomas Thomas all marriages would have to have been carried out in the parish church and not the chapel but post 1837 there may be chapel records. I have sent an email to one Ifan James who knows more about the Phillips family than anyone I know.
What part of Wales or the world do you live in?
Kind regards
Bryan
I have some photos of Scythlyn but of course the farmhouse has been extended but the farm buildings would have been contemporary; I also have photos of the old chapel in Pencader. Would you like me to send some copies on to you?
Regards
Bryan
