Agorwyd yr academi yn Neuaddlwyd yn Hydref 1810 o ganlyniad i ymdrechion gweinidogion o capeli yr Annibynwyr yn Sir Aberteifi. Roedd angen lle i hyfforddi dynion ifainc o gefndiroedd tlawd a’u paratoi ar gyfer y weinidogaeth. Ar y pryd roedd Thomas Phillips wedi adeiladu tŷ bychan dwy ystafell ar gaeau ei fferm ym Mhenybanc ble roedd yn dysgu ei blant ei hun, a chynigiodd y safle hwn ar gyfer yr academi. Felly y dechreuodd ei gysylltiad 30 blynedd â’r ysgol.

Penodwyd y Parchg John Maurice i ddysgu’r clasuron a Phillips i ddysgu diwinyddiaeth. Yn anffodus bu farw Maurice o’r diciâu o fewn blwyddyn ac wedi hynny Phillips fu unig feistr yr ysgol am 30 blynedd. (Cai gymorth o dro i dro gan y myfyrwyr hŷn.)

Roedd Phillips yn honni ei fod wedi hyfforddi 200 o weinidogion o bob enwad yn ystod oes yr academi, gan gynnwys y ddau genhadwr cyntaf a deithiodd i Fadagascar, Jones a Bevan

Bydd 2010 yn ddauganmlwyddiant sefydlu’r academi a oedd bryd hynny yn enwog yng Nghymru ac yn adnabyddus drwy Brydain. Yn wir, roedd ei henwogrwydd wedi cyrraedd America ac anrhydeddwyd Phillips ym 1831 gyda Doethuriaeth mewn Diwinyddiaeth gan yr hyn a elwir heddiw yn Brifysgol Princeton. Roedd yn arwyddocaol yn hanes eglwysig ac addysgol Cymru ar ddechrau’r 19eg ganrif ac mae’n briodol fod ein bod yn dathlu ei sefydlu.

Cynigir fod yr achlysur hwn yn cael ei gofnodi gydag ymweliad â safle’r ysgol, cyfarfod i drafod gwaith Thomas Phillips a’r academi, pryd bwyd i ddathlu a gwasanaeth yn y capel yn Neuaddlwyd.

Er mwyn i hyn ddigwydd mewn dull ystyrlon byddai angen cyfraniad gan y rhai hynny sydd ag unrhyw gysylltiad â’r ysgol neu Thomas Phillips i ddod at ei gilydd yn Neuaddlwyd yn Hydref 2010. Agorodd yr academi ar y 18fed felly cynhelir y dathliad ar y 15fed, 16eg a’r 17eg gan mai hwnnw yw’r penwythnos agosaf.

Os hoffech chi fynychu, neu hyd yn oed os mai diddordeb yn unig sydd gennych yn yr academi neu deulu Phillips, gadewch neges ar y safle os gwelwch yn dda. Os ydych yn perthyn i Thomas Phillips, byddai’n arbennig o ddefnyddiol petaech yn nodi hynny.

Bydd y safle hwn yn cael ei ddiweddaru wrth i faterion ddatblygu.

Hi… my gt gt grandfather was a pupil at the academy….he was also called David Jones and was the minister at Capel Sul Kidwelly from 1824-1867…(there seems to have been a few David Jones’s about at the time and I’m doubtful that he’s the one who went to Madagascar).

I know that he came from nearby Cilcennin and wondered if you knew whether any admission or graduation lists exist for the academy…Regards, David

    Dear Dr George,
Thank you for your email. The Celebration will be held on the 15th,16th,and 17th October this year and some details are available on the website under Bryan’s blog. It will be a great thing to gather as many of Thomas Phillip’s descendants together and hopefully learn more about our extended family tree. I am descended from his daughter Elizabeth and her husband Moses Rees wrote the Cofiant of Phillips in 1845.
We hope to meet on the 15th at the Feathers Hotel in Aberaeron for discussions and presentations about the academy, the students, missionaries and the Phillips family. This will be followed by a diner in the evening. On 16th there are planned to be visits to the site of the school, Neuaddlwyd chapel, possibly Scythlyn farm and maybe other places associated with Phillips. On Sunday 17th there will be a service in the chapel at Neuaddlwyd. The academy was opened on the 18th October 1810 and this is the closest weekend to that date.
I look forward to meeting you.
    Kind regards
    Bryan Jones

    Dear Mr Dobbs
Thank you for your email. I was in contact with Mary who expressed a strong wish, shortly before she went into hospital, to attend this year. Her death was as sudden as it was sad and she must be greatly missed by her family.
I am sure you are in contact with other members of the Dobbs family in South Wales, one has contacted me .
The celebration will start on the 15th with a morning of lectures about the school, missionaries and the Phillips family. In the afternoon there will be an open forum for anyone to talk for 15 mins about their own knowledge or experience or family connection. This will be followed by a diner in the evening, al at the Feathers Hotel, Aberaeron.
Saturday will be a visit to the site of the school, Neuaddlwyd and other places connected with Phillips.
Sunday there will be a service of celebration at Neuaddlwyd chapel.
You can fill in a form available on the site and details will be sent by September.
    Kind regards
    Bryan Jones
